2. Obesity as a Disease: More Than One Half of U.S. Adults Are Overweight or Obese The U.S. is experiencing an epidemic of obesity. The increasing prevalence of obesity makes it one of the most pervasive public health problems in the country. According to data from NHANES III (1988 to 1994), 54.9% of the U.S. population aged 20 and over were overweight (BMI >25) in 1994. In addition, the prevalence among youth in the U.S. has also increased dramatically. The numbers are more striking, however, in the adult obese population (BMI >30), where the prevalence has increased by over 50% since 1980 (14.4% in 1980 vs. 22.3% in 1994).
